FROM THE ARCHIVES scored again on 32 minutes to leave us trailing 4-0 at the half-time interval, with Martin Peters netting a second-half consolation for us. The two teams were: Ajax: Wever, Suurbier, Blankenburg, Hulshoff, Krol, Neeskens, Haan, Muhren G, Swart (Kleton), Cruyff (Rep), Keizer (Muhren A). Only once in our European history have we faced Ajax in competitive action and that came during the Cup Winners' Cup in 1981/82. The two teams were paired in the first round and this was our first appearance in Europe for seven years, achieved having won the FA Cup against Manchester City in May, 1981. The first leg took place in Amsterdam at the Olympic Stadium on 16 September, 1981, and we produced a fine performance in front of a 35,000-strong crowd and were well worthy of our 3-1 victory. We weathered an early Ajax storm and established a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to a brace from Mark Falco. After 20 minutes, Ossie Ardiles found him with a pass and he slotted past Piet Schrijvers in the home goal and added his second seven minutes later with a far-post finish after Graham Roberts had flicked on Tony Galvin's corner. Ardiles was again the provider in the 67th minute, j slipping the ball into Ricky Villa who rounded the goalkeeper to make it 3-0. Danish international Soren Lerby pulled a goal back for Ajax a minute later but we held firm and headed back to London with a two-goal lead. Teams: Spurs: Clemence, Hughton, Milter, Roberts (Lacy), Villa, Perryman, Ardiles, Archibald, Galvin, Hoddle, Falco. Ajax: Galje, Molenaar, Janse, Wijnberg, Boeve, Vanenburg, Schoenaker, Lerby, Hamberg (Silooy), Kieft, Olsen. In addition to the club matches listed, we have also played Teams: Ajax: Schrijvers, Jansen (Wijnberg), Molenaar, Boeve, Ziegler, Lerby, Olsen, Hamberg, Ling, Ophof (Vanenburg), Schoenaker. Spurs: Clemence, Hughton, Miller, Roberts, Villa, Perryman, Ardiles, Archibald, Galvin, Hoddle, Falco. A clinical 12-minute spell settled the second leg at White Hart Lane on 29 September, as we hit three goals without reply to seal a 6-1 aggregate victory against Ajax. A crowd of 34,606 turned up to see if we could complete the job - and we did so with a minimum of fuss, although it wasn't until the 70th-minute that our domination paid off. Glenn Hoddle was the architect of the opening goal, launching a precise pass from deep inside his own half to Falco, who played a short pass inside and Tony Galvin clipped his shot from the edge of the area beyond Ajax keeper Hans Galje. Six minutes later, Hoddle set Steve Archibald clear and after evading the challenge of Galje, squared to Falco who scored from close range. And we saved the best until last, Ardiles wrapping up the scoring eight minutes from time with a 20-yard drive on the stretch that flew into the top corner. We then overcame Dundalk and Eintracht Frankfurt before losing to Barcelona in the semi-finals. TOTTENHAMHOTSPUR.COM
