The club's first ever game on this day was played in front of
a crowd of 3,000 with the Bhoys defeating Partick Thistle
4-0 at Celtic Park, Peter Somers was the hat-trick hero,
while John Divers netted the other one, Somers played for
the club between 1897 and 1909, making 219 appearances and scoring 62 goals.
An integral part of much of Celtic's six-in-a-row triumph, Somers left the club
in 1909 but was dead within five years, tragically dying at the age of just 36
following the amputation of part of a leg.
On their way to the first of six successive championships,
the Hoops travelled to Broomfield to take on Airdrie on
league business. The Celts recorded a 3-1 win courtesy of
goals from Jimmy McMenemy and an Alec Bennett double,
Bennett was to finish on 10 goals that term, eight in the league and two in the
Scottish Cup while McMenemy was to score once in the cup and seven times in
the league, However, top of the charts was Jimmy Quinn who was in the second
of 10 straight seasons when he would finish as top scorer, This time he finished
on 21 goals, with 19 of them scored in the league.
A1-0 victory over then Scottish League side Bo'ness, or
Borrowstounness to give the town its Sunday name, was
achieved courtesy of an Alec Thomson goal, Bo'ness joined
the Scottish League at the start of season 1921/22, along
with Alloa Athletic, Arbroath, Armadale, Bathgate, Broxburn, Clackmannan, East
Fife (Methil), Forfar Athletic, Kings Park (Stirling) and Stenhousemuir, They were
expelled from Division Two along with Armadale in 1932/33 because they were
unable to fulfil their fixtures. Celtic had actually met Bo'ness the season before,
beating them 5-2 in the Scottish Cup quarter-final when Jimmy McGrory scored
twice, And the legendary striker also scored two when the teams met in a league
fixture at Celtic Park on March 31,1928, when the Hoops ran out 4-1 winners.
Celtic hit four goals against Third Lanark on this day in
1932, with Charlie Napier and Jimmy McGrory both scoring
twice. The two players would top the goalscoring chart
for Celtic that season, with McGrory, naturally, leading the
way with 30 goals in all competitions, and Napier on 20 goals for the season, all
of which came in the league. The Hoops would finish fourth in the league that
season, though they did make up for it with a 1-0 victory over Motherwell to
win the Scottish Cup, the only goal of the game coming from McGrory,
f Two goals from Joe McBride helped Celtic to a 3-0 win at
I \J Ak home against Hearts. His double - part of an overall haul of
I U U 35 8°als scored that season, was all the more impressive
since he didn't play after the turn of the year - came in
the last 15 minutes, the second a late penalty. The Hoops had led through a
first-half own-goal.
