AJAX kicked off their European campaign
this season in the UEFA Champions League
third qualifying round with a visit to another
of Celtic's European adversaries. Rapid
Vienna on July 29.
The Austrian side also joined at this juncture in
the competition but the home side in the
Ernst-Happel-Stadion were silenced in the
25th minute when Dutch skipper, Davy Klaassen
opened the scoring,
The 22-year-old gave the visiting fans further
cause to celebrate when he made it 2-0 to Ajax just
two minutes before the break to put the Eredivisie
side in a steady lead.
However, just three minutes after the turnaround,
midfielder, Florian Kainz reduced the deficit to give
the home fans some belief but their hopes were
seemingly dashed just before the hour mark when
fellow midfielder, Stefan Schwab was given his
marching orders by referee, Willie Coilum.
