Origins:
Although not an official Jewish
club like the city's WV-FIEDW,
Ajax have been associated with
Amsterdam's Jewish community
ever since the club moved
next to the Amsterdam-Oost
neighbourhood.
Their first proper stadium was
Het Houten Stadion, or The
Wooden Stadium, which they used
from 1911 until they were housed
in the Olympic Stadium built for
the 1928 games. In 1924 they
moved to the De Meer Stadion,
where they played until moving to
the ArenA in 1996.
on 71 points from the 34 games
played while the title was won by
PSV Eindhoven, who garnered 88
points throughout the campaign,
with both teams winning 3-1
against each other away from
home. In the KNVB Cup, Ajax
overcame fourth-tier sides
JOS Watergraafsmeer and SV Urk
9-0 and 4-0 respectively before
losing 4-0 themselves to Vitesse
in the fourth round. In Champions
League Group F, Ajax finished
third below Barcelona and Paris
Saint-Germain before transferring
to the UEFA Europa League,
where they reached the last 16
before going out to eventual
finalists, Dnipro, on the away
goals rule.
All of the meetings with Ajax
of Amsterdam have provided
lasting memories for Celtic
supporters - even the first
clash when, while beating
Celtic, they were in the throes
of announcing themselves on
the world stage. The other
two meetings have resulted in
wins for the Hoops and both
were historic and memorable
in their own rights. However,
the clash in 2001 was one of
the highlights of the Martin
O'Neill era when the Celts
qualified for the group stages
and re-instilled the European
belief in Celtic and the
supporters.
