CELTIC'S first ever game on this day was
played in 1892 at St Mirren's old West March
ground when an 8,000 crowd saw the Bhoys
win 3-1 on the way to their first ever title,
Johnny Madden, Johnny Campbell and Jimmy
Blessington hit the goals against the Paisley
side who would finish third in the league
that term, That was the Buddies' highest
finish until season 1979/80 when they
finished third from the top again.
CELTIC legend Johnny Crum (above) made
his debut on this day in 1932 and took part
in a day to remember by hitting two of
Celtic's goals in a 4-1 home league win over
Motherwell, The 20-year-old had joined from
historic Celtic nursery side Ashfield in February
of that year and would spend 10 years with
the club before moving on to Morton for the
last four years of his career between 1942-46,
Those two goals were the first of 88 goals in
211 games before war broke out and he was to
go on and hit another 23 goals in 69 wartime
games before moving to Greenock, Crum was
a key member of the great Celtic strike-force
of the 1930s, and when he scored against
Everton in the Exhibition Trophy final at Ibrox
in 1938 he rejoiced with an impromptu jig in
front of the Celtic End in an era when such
celebrations were unheard of.
