My goal against Ajax is up there with att of the
important ones - the 1 980 cup final, the 4-2 game, Real
Madrid goal, Dundee United when we won the league
So do you remember your winning
goal well?
The last 10 minutes of the game suited
us because we were out of it so we had
nothing to lose, My goal was one the
three of us were all involved in - Charlie
got it, passed it to Frank, who passed
it to me, I drew the centre-half out and
went by him. I struck it with my left foot
and it went right across the box. I caught
it sweet as a nut. We were all too busy
celebrating, though, and hadn't realised
the referee had allowed the game to kick
off again. It was only Danny McGrain who
was back so he had to cause a foul - he just
grabbed someone and manhandled them
to allow us all to get back in time, That was
typical of the referees in that time, it was
scandalous.
When did your achievements start to
sink in?
I don't think it sinks in until years and
years later after you stop and think about
what you did. I remember going into
their dressing room after the game
trying to swap my jersey but every one
of them had their heads down. They all
said no, and told me to get out, but as I
was going out Cruyff was lying having
a massage on the table. He shouted on
me, took his top off and said he would
swap with me because I scored a great
goal. I didn't want any of the other tops
after that, I got the main man's,
Where does that goal rank in
terms of your favourites for
Celtic?
It's up there with all of the important
ones - the 1980 cup final, the 4-2 game,
Real Madrid goal, Dundee United when
we won the league - it was up there
with all of them because it got us into
the next round. The game is one people
will always remember. I said about
9,000 fans were there but when you
listen to people nowadays they were all
there, Everyone I meet was there but
they probably weren't even born then,
Does the fact Real Sociedad knocked
Celtic out in the next round take some
of the shine off the result?
It was a shame we beat such a big team
but then went out in the next round, yes,
That was really disappointing because
it undid all of our hard work but these
things happen in football,
What do you think of Ajax nowadays
and how vital are the next two games
for Neil Lennon's side?
Ajax like to play football, They bring the
kids up in that manner in their academy
and the kids all play that kind of football. 1
think they lost their best player, Christian
Eriksen, when he signed for Tottenham,
I don't see why we can't beat them home
and away, and it's a massive double-
header if we are to progress out of the
group.
