AFC Ajax became Dutch champions
for the 31 st time last season - so
extending their lead over main rivals
PSV Eindhoven, with 21 titles, and
Feyenoord, on 14.
Frank de Boer's team finished on 76
points - six points clear of PSV - after
winning 23, drawing seven and
losing just four of their
34 Eredivisie matches.
Along the way they
scored 93 goals, and
conceded just 36.
It was Ajax's second
successive title
under de Boer, but
prior to that Ajax had
gone seven seasons
without winning the
Eredivisie crown.
Current Fulham boss Martin Jol came
close to ending that run in 2009-10,
but his side eventually missed out by
a point to Steve McClaren's FC Twente
despite rattling in 106 goals - 35 of
them coming from current Liverpool
star Luis Suarez.
When Jol left Ajax in December 2010 he
was succeeded by de Boer, who secured
the title on his 41 st birthday as Ajax
beat defending champions FC Twente
3-1 in the final match of the season.
Flaving since retained their title Ajax
will be out to make an impact in this
season's Champions League,
after falling at the group
stage last season behind
Real Madrid and Lyon.
The Dutch club are
four-time European
champions-reeling
off three successive
successes between
1971-73 when Johan
Cruyff was in his heyday.
Ajax were last European
champions in 1995, when
Patrick Kluivert's 85th minute goal
earned a 1 -0 win over AC Milan in the final.
