Dutch giants Ajax last visited
Carrow Road as part of the Canaries'
Centenary celebrations in July 2002.
A Carrow Road showpiece match
against Ronald Koeman's side on
Saturday, July 27,2002 formed part
of Norwich's pre-season programme.
The fixture was proceeded by the then
Ajax Head Coach officially opening
the Canaries'indoor Academy arena at
Colney on the morning of the game.
Sammy Morgan, then the Club's
Academy Director, welcomed Club
officials including manager, Board
members, Academy sponsors and
representatives of the building
contactors to Colney for the event.
Koeman, a former Dutch international
who also graced teams such as
Barcelona, Feynoord and Ajax, unveiled a
plaque to commemorate the occasion.
Koeman then thanked the people
of Norwich for their hospitality and
expressed his hope for a friendly and
entertaining game at Carrow Road later
in the day. The guests were then treated
to a training presentation by various
Academy players inside the arena.
The Canaries'Centenary match later
in the day lived up to its billing, the
visitors were as expected - a class act.
City took to the field sporting their pale
blue and white halved Centenary shirts
-just as they did when they first played
at Newmarket Road 100 years earlier.
Despite a gulf in class between the
Champions League participants and
their hosts, only one goal separated
the two teams at the end of an
entertaining affair. Swedish striker
Zlatan Ibrahimovic grabbed the game's
only goal midway through the first-half
that proved enough to seal a win for the
men from Amsterdam.
