BACK THE BRISTOL BID BRISTOL 7 Welcome back to Ashton Gate for our first pre-season game of the new season. home 0871 222 66 66 I bcfc.co.uk I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all Ajax club officials, players and supporters to England and Ashton Gate. It's great to have a club with such a distinguished record as Ajax - with four European Cups to their name - as our opponents this evening. With all the attention surrounding Bristol's bid as a Candidate Host City for the FA's bid to bring the World Cup to England in 2018, it's appropriate to have a side of such international repute playing here. Everyone talks about how big an occasion the World Cup is; just ask yourself what the World Cup means to you? I remember watching England win the World Cup in 1966. How great it would be to repeat that feat in 2018. I've been to World Cups in japan, Germany and France, and I've seen how vibrant an occasion it is for the cities and country involved. It would be great to see Bristol transformed in that way. On Monday the FA made its first of two visits to Bristol and it will be interesting to discover their feedback to see what we need to do to make sure Bristol's bid to become a Host City succeeds. Tonight offers Bristol City fans their first real chance to show their support for the bid and I'd urge everyone here to get behind it with real gusto. If you haven't already done so, please make time to visit bristol2018.net - the official site of Bristol's bid - and click the link to support our bid with the FA. If we were able to bring the World Cup here it would be fantastic for Bristol as a whole, but also for Bristol City Football Club by association. Of course, the new stadium at Ashton Vale would be hosting the World Cup matches. It would also bring the world's focus on Bristol as a footballing city. This could in turn help us attract more players BRlST0L2018.nET BBCH BRISTOL TO BECOME R 2018 WORLD CUP HOST CIT9 Visit bristol2018.net website to support our bid. to the city, and persuade more fans to attend matches, as well as boosting football at all levels in the area. Finally, I'd like to bring to your attention to 'England for Glory" - the new song penned by Bristolian Paul Hobbs for England's 2018 World Cup bid. I took part in the Bath to Bristol charity walk for Meningitis UK recently, an event organised by Paul that raised over £20,000. I've heard the song and I think it's a catchy tune which you could easily get wrapped-up in. Paul is effervescent with enthusiasm and his efforts are very commendable. If you haven't heard it yet, visit the Bristol Evening Post website, thisisbristol.co.uk/worldcup.
