ROY'S RETURN TO NOTTINGHAM
NOTTINGHAM FOREST O SUNDERLAND 1
MATCH FACTS
HBP J
Wednesday 30th July 2008
El-Hadji Diouf and Pascal
Chimbonda made their debuts.
Andy Reid captained the side on
his return to the City Ground.
Darren Ward and of course Roy
Keane and Tony Loughlan were
also returning to the City Ground.
Injury prevented Forest's
Andy Cole from facing
his old team mates.
Sunderland voluntarily
finished the game with
ten men after withdrawing
Danny Higginbotham for
the final few minutes.
2,377 travelling fans were in
the healthy pre-season crowd
of 12,573 for the Lads' first
UK game of the season.
As in the previous Monday's
game, while the match was
in progress an incoming
transfer was confirmed,
this time Steed Malbranque
being added to the squad.
KIERAN RICHARDSON SCORED
A CRACKING WINNER
DEBUTANT EL-HADJI
if DIOUF IS SURE TO
BE A LIVEWIRE THIS
SEASON
An excellent goal from Kieran
Richardson was enough to beat
Championship newcomers Forest in
what was an ideal workout. New look
Sunderland have a clear injection of
added quality on the ball and with
Teemu Tanio dictating play from the
midfield anchor role and El-Hadji Diouf
and Pascal Chimbonda combining
on the right there was much for the
red and white army to ponder.
Grant Leadbitter came nearest for
Sunderland in the opening hour as
Daryl Murphy once more played as a
lone striker ahead of an increasingly
fluid five man midfield. A host of subs
with half an hour to go coincided with
a switch to 4-4-2 with the winner
coming 11 minutes later, Richardson
firing home after Anthony Stokes got
behind the home defence to tee him up.
