stories of Joe Bolton, Kevin Arnott, Vic
Halom, Dick Malone, Chris Makin, John
Kay, Barry Siddall, Julio Area and Nyron
Nosworthy told in their own words.
To illustrate that cult heroes are not
just a modern phenomenon there's also
a chapter on L.R. Roose, a goalie from a
century ago and perhaps the biggest cult
hero of them all. Presented with a token
of their affection by supporters at the end
of his first season in honour of his efforts
to successfully protect Sunderland's top
flight status, Roose was an eccentric who
played as an amateur with notoriously
outrageous expense claims, his habit
of regularly exploiting an old rule that
allowed goalkeepers to bounce the ball as
far as the half way line forced the FA to
change the rules, he often claimed to be a
doctor when he was a medical assistant,
was taught by the author of 'The War of
the Worlds' H.G. Wells and was effectively
part of football's first celebrity couple
through his relationship with mega music
hall star Marie Lloyd. L.R. Roose was killed
in the First World War but remains an
enduring figure in the history of SAFC.
Richard Ord, Lionel Perez, Reuben
Agboola and Alex Rae also figure in the
book which also seeks to explain exactly
what makes a player a 'Cult Hero.'
