Jardine was to play in both matches
against the Dutch masters and was
thrilled to go head-to-head with one of
the greatest teams in European history.
He said: "The match against Ajax was
part of our centenary celebrations but it
was also the first ever Super Cup to be
played involving the winners from the
European Cup and Cup Winners' Cup.
"It was a very exciting match for us
to play in as we knew that Ajax were a
fantastic team.
"They had beaten Inter Milan in the
final of the European Cup in 72 and
also won the tournament in 71 so they
were exceptionally strong at that time,
probably the best Dutch side of all
time. The fact that they also lifted the
trophy in 73 to make it a hat-trick of
wins says it all.
"Cruyff was majestic but if you look
at the list of players they had at that
time it was unbelievable.
"It was quite funny because i
remember Jock Wallace sent one of
our coaches Stan Anderson across to
look at them in action and see what
they were like before we played them.
"He came back and his first words
were: 'Right lads, this team you are
going to play doesn't have a weakness!'
"It was quite funny the way he said it
because it was tongue-in-cheek but at
the same time we all knew that he was
telling the truth."
Sandy has fond memories from both
games even although he admits that
his side were well beaten in the first-leg
at Ibrox.
"Ajax beat us quite convincingly 3-1
at Ibrox and anyone that was at the
game will tell you what an exceptional
group of players they had.
"They went in front through Rep but
