His Gunners career began back on
the opening day of the 1995/96
season, when he made his debut in
the 1-1 Premier League draw with
Middlesbrough at Highbury.
His first goals came the following
month in a 4-2 win over
Southampton, and he scored 16
goals that season.
He netted 14 more the following
season, and really hit the heights in
1997/98 when his 22 goals helped
Arsène Wenger's team to the 'double'.
That season he also cleaned up the
individual awards, earning both the
Football Writers' Association and
PFA Player of the Year honours, as
well as winning the Premiership
Goal of the Season award for his
third strike in the draw with
Leicester City at Filbert Street.
In 2000 Dennis reached his first
European final with the Club, but
was unable to prevent Galatasaray
winning the UEFA Cup on penalties.
Having missed the 1998 FA Cup Final
through injury, Dennis finally made it
to an FA Cup Final in 2001, at the
Millennium Stadium, but was on the
losing side as Liverpool won 2-1.
The next season Dennis was back at
the Millennium Stadium for
the FA Cup Final, and this
time played his part in a 2-0
win over Chelsea.
It completed half of a second
'double', as the Gunners
again won the league too
that season.
Dennis also won his second
Premiership Goal of the
Season award that year, for
his goal against Newcastle at St
james' Park.
In January 2003, at home to Oxford
United in the FA Cup, Dennis netted
his 100th Arsenal goal - becoming
only the 15th player in the Club's
history to reach the landmark. He
finished the season by getting his
hands on the FA Cup once more.
In 2003/04 Dennis was part of the
Arsenal team which went unbeaten
throughout the entire league
season, ensuring his name would
forever go down in history in English
football.
During the season Dennis
occasionally led the side out as
skipper, he marked his first game as
captain with a goal at Birmingham.
Dennis played in his fourth FA Cup
Final the following season, beating
Manchester United on penalties
after a 0-0 draw at the
Millennium Stadium.
The Dutchman extended his
contract at Highbury for a further
year at the end of the season
following a fine performance in the
7-0 win over Everton.
Season 2005/06 was his last in
football, and towards the end of the
campaign, the Arsenal fans
honoured him with a special 'Dennis
Bergkamp matchday' at Highbury for
the game against West Bromwich
Albion.
Predictably Dennis marked the
occasion with a stunning goal, which
proved to be his last in an Arsenal
shirt.
