The goal that broke the record, previously held by
Faas Wilkes, came in the last minute of the 1998
World Cup Quarter-Final against Argentina (right).
It proved to be the winner, and the strike was later
voted best goal of the tournament.
He made his debut against Italy in a friendly in
Palermo in September 1990. Holland won 1-0, and
just two months later he celebrated his first goal
in orange. It came in a 2-0 European
Championships qualifier win over Greece.
During his international career, Dennis played in
five major tournaments, but was knocked out
of four of them on penalties.
His last game proved to be the European
Championships semi-final defeat to Italy in
2000. Dennis had been substituted late in that
match so had to watch from the sidelines as
the Italians beat Holland in the shoot-out.
His goalscoring record has since been
overtaken by Patrick Kluivert, but he remains
second in the list, and joint seventh in the all-
time appearance list for Holland.
