Since the 3-1 victory over Dynamo Tblisi, a hectic
atmosphere has hit Brondby IF. Just ahead, Ajax
Amsterdam is waiting. A major team. A huge
match. A lot of focus has been directed at the
game and on the players, and expectations are
high - perhaps a bit too high.

The most important aspect of the win over Dy
namo Tblisi was, actually, that we ensured our
selves at least 2 rounds of European football -
that is, in addition to the face-off against Ajax
Amsterdam. Apart from that, the victory was in
deed significant for the continued development
of our young team.
It is clear that there will be a lot of focus on our
possibility to get into Champion's League, but it
isn't all-important: In this situation, the football
world is not black or white. Fortunately, there is
something in between. It might very well be that
we are, at this time, not yet strong enough to
beat a premiere team like Ajax. It could also be
that we are indeed strong enough, but that the
margins simply aren't with us in those two
games. That doesn't mean that a combined de
feat will mean that we can't have a successful Eu
ropean season. A defeat against Ajax will not of
fer us access to Champion's League, but will, on
the other hand, get us to the first round in the
UEFA Cup. No matter what new and great chal
lenges await us, and that is a prime opportunity
for us to further develop the team and the many
young players.
Solid Foundation
So, even though there will be, from the media,
massive focus on Champion's League qualifica
tions and the multi-millions in start-up money, in
my judgement, which I hope the players will take
into consideration, we must try best possible to
de-dramatise the situation. Of course, we must
do all that we can to achieve a victory, but if we
miss, it is neither a financially or a sporting disas
ter in a club like Brondby IF, where both the ath
letic and economic foundations are quite solid.
Thus, there are no grounds for excessive nervous
ness. It's a couple of important games, but not
more than that.
Ajax Amsterdam is, perhaps better than some,
representative of ball-possesive, skilled, and at
tacking football. Exactly how we prefer football
in Brondby IF. Therefore, it is an extra exciting
challenge to meet this team. We must not forget,
however, that we are up against one of the gi
ants in European football. For decades, Ajax Am
sterdam has in best fashion set its mark on Euro
pean premiere football.

their fans, the four referees, UEFA's representa
tives and last, but not least, our own loyal specta
tors and fans with the wish for a good game
played in best fair-play spirit, both on and off the
pitch.
