goalkeeper is today the head coach of the team's
goalkeepers and assistant coach.
The history of the club
The Maccabi World Union organization was founded in
Europe in 1927. The name Maccabi referred to the new Zionist
movement. The saga of the ancient Maccabees celebrated at
the Jewish festival Hanukah signifies the courageous fight,
for freedom of conscience and Thousands of years before
religion, for autonomy and sovereignty - the very goals toward
which modern Zionism strove.
A new emblem was designed to show four Hebrew
letters, which spelled Maccabi in the form of the Jewish
Star of David.
The Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club is the leading
football club in Israel and the first Israeli club in history
to participate in the European Championship Cup.
Maccabi Tel Aviv holds the Israeli record for winning
.the most championships and national cups
Just over 35 years ago Maccabi Tel Aviv won the Asian
Championship Cup. During the final in Bangkok they
beat South Korean champions Yangzi 1-0. Two years
later (1971) Maccabi Tel Aviv won the Cup for the second
time on a default, when the Baghdad Police Club players
did not turn up for the final in Bangkok.
More Maccabi Tel Aviv players have played for the
national team than from any other club. In the fifties and
sixties the leading players were Eli Fuchs, Joseph
Mirmovitch, Yehshua Glazer, Joseph Goldstein, Shmuel
Israeli, Yitshak Shneur and Rafael Levi.
The next generation consisted of players including Giora
Spiegel, Zvi Rosen, Menahem Bello and Rahamim Talvi.
They all played with the national team in the World Cup
finals in 1970 in Mexico. Later followed Meir Nimni,
The head coach, Nir Klinger, with a record of 83
international games during his 6 years as the captain of
Israel's national team, played for Maccabi Tel Aviv for
8 years and scored 42 goals.
Klinger won the israeli championship in his first year
as the head coach of the team.
The present Managing director of the team- Mr. Eli
Driks played for almost 20 years for the club.
As the team's striker, Driks won with the team 3
championships and 2 national cups cooperating with Nir
of Klinger and Alexander Ouvarov under the instruction
the present Israeli National team coach- Mr. Avraham
Grant. After 3 failures of qualifying to the group stage
of UEFA Champions League in the past, this year the
team beat HJK Helsinki (Finland), and PAOK Saloniki
(Greece) in the way to the league with the top team of
the continent.
