The Sony Amsterdam Tournament 2001 WELCOME HL it is with great pleasure that we welcome you to The Sony Amsterdam Tournament 2003. Tournament 2003 For our host club, AFC Ajax, it has been a year of con solidation. For those of you who were here last year, in the last minutes of the final game, you will recall Richard Witschge scored a truly magnificent winning goal against FC Barcelona - an event which set the Amsterdam ArenA alight. AFC Ajax won 4-3. We trust that the tempo created on the evening of that quite phenomenal game provided the AFC Ajax coach, Ronald Koeman, and his magnificent aides with the impetus for what became a most solid season for AFC Ajax, culminating with a Quarter-Final game in the prestigious European Champions League. Onward and upward. We hope and trust that, again this year, The Sony Amsterdam Tournament will provide a springboard for the forthcoming season and that further success ensues this year for AFC Ajax. A few weeks ago, at the last game of the season, Michael van Praag retired as President ofAjax.Take a well-deserved bow to a packed stadium here at the Amsterdam ArenA. We,The International Event Partnership, would like to pay our tribute to Michael for his tremendous support to the tournament - his knowledge, abilities and above-calm con siderations have been the hallmark of a very special man and very much appreciated. We wish him, his family and friends good health and every future happiness. In saying farewell to Michael van Praag, we welcome John Jaakke, who will now take up the mantle of Pre sident to AFC Ajax. To John, we wish every success - the mantle of responsibility is in safe hands. This year's tournament sees an absolute galaxy of National League Champions, Cup Champions, UEFA Cup, European Champions, Super Cup and World Cup teams - in alphabetical order: AFC Ajax - 28 League Championships 15 Domestic Cups 4 European Champions Cups/1 European Cup/i UEFA Cup 3 European Super Cups 2 World Club Cups. Liverpool Football Club - 18 League Championships 6 Domestic Cups 6 League Cups 4 European Cham pions Cups 3 UEFA Cups 2 European Super Cups. One of the exciting elements of football is the transfer of players from club to club and we have, yet again, another unique area of activity with the mix of players, most of whom have been associated with AFC Ajax. This year's tournament will undoubtedly have the media keen and interested in Andy van der Meyde, Frank de Boer and what about Hakan Sükür, Christian Vieri, Rafael van der Vaart and Francesco Toldo? And but, once again, we say to those of you who support this tournament so well and so regularly thank you and trust that you have a most enjoyable visit to the Amsterdam ArenA.
