NFFCOMMUNITY
BRINGING FOOTBALL TO YOUR DOORSTEP
SUMMER PROGRAMMES
Over the last 10 months our
Football in the Community coaches
have been working very hard to
provide as many children as
possible with a great introduction
to their favourite sport.
We have visited more than 300
schools in the East Midlands to
provide skills coaching for every
child regardless of ability.
We have had some very
complimentary letters from schools
about this service. Many schools
find the coaching fits exactly into
the requirements of the National
Curnculum as, in common with other
invasion games, the programme
includes aspects of individual
performance in a team situation.
Schools also find the activities to
be the perfect vehicle to help
develop social skills.
Some clubs concentrate solely on
children who have the potential to be
professional footballers by coaching
school and representative teams.
But this year's Community scheme
has staged more than 3,000
coaching sessions with in the
region of 75,000 children
benefiting from our expertise.
We have had a great year in the
schools but we are planning to
try better that next year. In fact,
we are currently looking for a new
Community officer to increase our
ability to reach even more schools,
particularly in the Nottingham
city area.
Our 'After School' programme has
also been a great success. This year,
we have managed to double the
number of'after the bell' sessions
delivered into local schools.
In a typical school week, we visit 15
schools and see as many as 750
children at a time when parents are
still working and not available to
provide them with the appropriate
supervision.
We are also looking to expand this
successful programme into new
areas. We are currently working
towards submitting a proposal to
the Football Foundation for a grant
to fund after school sessions in the
inner city where there are
significant social problems.
These sessions will hopefully give
these children extra opportunities
in areas where there is a shortage
of sporting facilities.
Although our plans for the next academic year are well advanced, we still have to complete our summer
holiday programme of 30 venues catering for more than 3,000 children.
Some of these courses have been full for several weeks but there are still places available at most of
the venues.
We will be running six courses each week during the summer and visiting a wide area with coaching
based more on enjoyment than education, in order to ensure that the children all get the most out of
their break from school.
