He vied for the goalkeeper's jersey with Steve Sutton for almost three years before making the move south to Wimbledon in the early stages of the 1987-88 season. His cavalier style was ideally suited to The Dons at the time and he continued to have an excellent career in English football. Infamously embarked on a one-man strike for which he will always be remembered during his Forest days. But outside of that he had an excellent record after signing from Glasgow Celtic before the 1996 transfer deadline in a vain attempt to keep Forest in the Premier League. The following season he scored 34 league and cup goals - many of them spectacular free-kicks - in a prolific partnership with Kevin Campbell that took Forest straight back to the top flight. But in 1999 he returned to Holland with Vitesse Arnhem. It could be argued that his best days in English football were spent with Ipswich Town when he was in midfield tandem with fellow countryman Arnold Muhren in Bobby Robson's excellent side. But in his later years he was snapped up by Forest after a spell with Vancouver Whitecaps and in a short City Ground career he revealed the skill and artistry that made him such a delight to watch. He had only one season with Forest before returning to Holland to play for Fortuna Sittard. The Dutch international striker with the cultured left foot arrived from Italian club Foggia in a £2.5m deal, which was then a record for Forest. He teamed up with Stan Collymorein a striking partnership that electrified the Premier League and one that was largely responsible for Forest finishing the 1994-95 season in third place and qualifying for the UEFA Cup the following season. At the end of the 1996-97 season he was transferred to German club Hertha Berlin.
