It's only seven years since Ajax appeared at The
City Ground.
The occasion was a prestigious pre-season
tournament that involved ourselves, the Dutch
masters, Manchester United and Chelsea.
The tournament was played forthe Umbro Cup and
almost 50,000 fans turned up over two days to see
some thrilling action.
Chelsea were the overall winners, beating
Ajax 2-0 in the final and leaving then skipper
Dennis Wise to lift the impressive trophy.
Chelsea had beaten us on penalties to clinch their
place in the final, white Ajax beat United 2-1.
In the play-off for third and fourth places we were
beaten 2-1 by United with Kevin Campbell scoring
our goal.
The tournament was played outin extremely hot
weather but there was a carnival atmosphere about
the two days - enhanced by the presence of the
famous Teletoeters Band from Holland.
