JOHN GREGORY: The former English International was a surprise
replacement for Brian Little in the middle of the 1997/98 season. However, by changing
Villa's position from relegation zone to the heights of the table, he proved that he was just
the right man for the Aston Villa manager's chair. By mixing intelligent English Youth
Internationals with World Cup-tested veterans, he has created a team that is dangerous to
play against and exciting to watch.
Player Profiles:
GARETH SOUTHGATE: The team's skipper and one of the most
dependable defenders in England, Southgate acts as the glue that holds the back four together.
His intelligence and speed are unmatched, and his sense of calm under pressure and tenacity
strike fear into the hearts of the Premier League. A member of England's European
Championships and World Cup squads, he is equally adept at advancing the ball from the
back, and providing a passing option for his teammates.
DAVID JAMES: James travels to the Gotham Cup as one of Villa's
biggest off-season signings. Brought in to replace Mark Bosnich, who left for Manchester
United, the former England 'keeper is extremely agile for a big man and a great shot-stopper
with good positional sense. A towering presence inside the six-yard box, James should be
Villa's first team netminder this year.
DION DUBLIN: Dublin faced the daunting task of replacing Dwight
Yorke when he arrived from Coventry in 1998, but nine goals in his first six games left little
doubt in the minds of skeptics. Possessing a true English center forward's size, strength and
pace, Dublin's ability to play more than one position earned him a much-deserved call up to
the England squad.

GIOVANNI TRAPPATON1: One of the most successful Italian coaches is
coming to Giants Stadium. Trappatoni, who has won trophy after trophy in Italy, and enjoys
tremendous respect in a league that is regarded by most soccer fans as the toughest league in
the world. "Tïap" (as he is known) always finds a way to win, and is known for his tremen
dous ability to make superstars play together as teammates. Having coached Juventus, Inter
•Milan, and Bayern Munich to national titles and trophies around Europe, he is arguably one
of the best coaches in the world.
Player Profiles:
GABRIELA BATISTUTA: Possibly the best forward in the world right
now, and one of the most consistent finishers to have ever played in the Serie A. Batistuta,
who has starred on every team he has played for (including Boca Juniors, and the
Argentinean National Team), is a superb soccer player. His work rate, shot and amazing ability to
single-handedly turn a game around has made him one of the most feared players in the world.
RUI COSTA: A very elegant Portuguese midfielder who has been
known throughout his career for his work rate and a consistent ability to finish. He was the
highest scoring midfielder in Serie A last season, making him one of the most
valuable and versatile players in Italy right now. Watch for Rui Costa to control the midfield
with his gliding runs and effortless ball handling.
PREDRAG MIJATOVIC: The Yugoslavian striker has always had an
amazing ability to show up and be successful where nobody expects him. In the 1998
European Cup Final he scored a beautiful goal for Real Madrid to lead them to victory.
Now, paired with Batistuta and Enrico Chiesa to form an amazing trio of front runners,
he could explode onto the Serie A scene.
