Success Story
What's in a name
AFC Ajax's Potuguese star Dani was
very upset when the shirt handed to
him in the dressing room prior to his
UEFA Champions League debut
against Rangers FC had the family
name Carvalho on the back. Even
though he scored twice in that game,
he insisted on a change to Dani.
But another 'mistake' on a UEFA
Champions Leagueshirt isn't a mistake
at all. The record books are
quite clear. A young defender
named Mark luliano made his
Italian league debut for
Salernitana in Serie B in
Messina on 21 April 1991;
made 27 appearances for the
same club in Serie C1 in the
next campaign; played 24 Serie
B games for Bologna in the
1992-93 season; moved to
Monza a year later and, after
two seasons back at Saler
nitana, arrived at the Stadio
delle Alpi to make his Serie A
debut for Juventus FC at the
start of this season.
However, Mark had noticed
that whenever his name was
wrongly printed as Juliano in
local newspapers or match pro-
As 'Carvalho', he scored twice against
Rangers FC. Two weeks later, as 'Dani',
the Portuguese player with Ajax was in a
better mood, even if he didn't score.
