CHAMPIONS
LEAGUE,
Borussia Dortmund v Juventus FC
13 September 1995
A capacity crowd of 35,000 packed into
the Westfalenstadion to watch Group C
kick off with a 'grudge match' between
the two teams which had met in the 1993
UEFA Cup final and the semi-final of the
same competition two years later. To add
even more spice to a succulent dish,
Dortmund were fielding four ex-Juventus
players - Andreas Möller, Julio César,
Stefan Reuter and Jürgen Kohier.
Curiuosly, Juventus fielded a further play
er who is now with the german club,
Paulo Sousa, while suspensions to twin
strikers Fabrizio Ravanelli and Gianluca
Vialli obliged Marcello Lippi to field a team
which, apart from the Portuguese midfiel
der, he could also line up today.
Dortmund's hopes of revenge for the two
earlier defeats were raised after just 31
seconds when Andreas Möller netted a
left-footed first-timer. But, even though
the German team dominated possession
by a handsome margin of 57-43 and cre
ated chances - the best of which fell to
newly-signed Fleiko Herrlich - they fell all
too often into the Italian offside trap and
were beaten by the efficiency of the
Juventus' counter-attacking game.
Michele Padovano headed the Italians
level after 12 minutes and, in the 37th
minute, Alessandro Del Piero put them
ahead with a spectacular curling shot.
Del Piero then set up the clincher in the
69th minute with a cross which Antonio
Conte converted with a powerful diving
header, Juve has started their campaign
with a 3-1 win and, ironically, Dortmund
were to be the only team to beat them in
Turin during the Italian club's run to the
title. Ten weeks later, goals by Michael
Zorc and Lars Rieken gave Dortmund a
2-1 win in the Stadio delle Alpi.
