Even though European nations occupied seven of the eight
quarter-final places in the 1994 World Cup finals, UEFA is
anxious to avoid any suspicion of complacency. A top team of
experts has been assembled to analyse the EURO '96 final
phase in England with a view to analysing the event and looking
for ways to improve standards throughout the continent.
During the first phase of the finals, the former French national
team coach, Gerard Houllier, will be analysing Group A
matches; the former Swiss national team coach Roy Hodgson,
currently with Inter Milan, will do likewise in Group B; Rinus
Michels, who led the Netherlands to victory in 1968, will be
casting a shrewd eye over Group C fixtures and the Swedish
national team coach, Tommy Svensson, will be putting Group D
under the magnifying glass. They will be assisted by the former
Swiss national team coach, Daniel Jeandupeux, and UEFA's
Technical Director, Andy Roxburgh, who was himself coach of
the Scottish national team.
Their aim is not only to record the event on a match-by-match
basis but also to report on technical and tactical trends and
pinpoint the lessons to be learned from EURO '96. At the same
time, they will act as judges for the "Man of the Match" awards
as well as electing the "Team of the Tournament" and the
"Coach of the Championship".
Comparisons with EURO '92 finals will provide an obvious basis
for the study, with attention paid to subjects like modifications
to specific functions of different positions, reactions attributable
to recent rule changes, the role of the coaches and the factors
which contributed to success or lack of it.
However, the experts stress that their job is not purely to watch
matches. Their analysis will also include observations at
training sessions, comparisons of management and
medical-support methods, attitudes towards Fair Play concepts
and how each team copes with the special demands imposed
by a tournament where the presence, for the first time,
of sixteen national teams will oblige the finalists to play six
matches and will generate even more intense media pressure
on the participants.
Once the tournament has finished, the panel of experts will
meet to exchange views and answer one burning question:
how did Europe's top teams compare with the opposition from
other continents they will meet in the 1998 World Cup.
