Every time that Panathinaikos meets
a Dutch team in the European compe
titions, its success during such meets
is assured. It is the third time that
Panathnaikos enconuters a Dutch
team and just as in the two previous
instances, so in this, success is a
given.
In the first case, it confronted its cur
rent opponent, Ajax, in the final game
of the European cup, on June 2, 1971
in Wembley.
It may have lost 2-0, but the fact that
it was present during the final round
constitutes to this date the greatest
success, not only in its own history
within the European competitions, but
in Greek soccer, generally.
The line-ups of that unforgetable
final:
2-6-1971
AJAX - PANATHINAIKOS 2-0

The second time that it opposed a
Dutch team was during the first round
of the European cup, of the 1984-85
period. Its rival then, Roud Gullit's and
Johnny Rep's Feyenord. On
September, 1984, it managed a tie
without a goal in Rotterdam and on
October 3, it won 2-1 at the Olympic
Stadium with a goal by Kostas
Mavridis, and by today's trainer, Juan
Ramon Rocha, though the Dutch goal
had been scoredc by Johnny Rep.
During that period Panathinaikos
marked its second success at the
European cup game, reaching the
semifinals of the organization,
where it was eliminated by Liberpool
(0-1,0-4).
Its luck was repeated again this year
(«third time... is a charm»), since it is
meeting Ajax during this particularly
significant stage of the competition.
