CHAMPIONS
LEAGUE
BRILLIANT
A notice on the wall of Wilfried Hoop's
office in Nyon would have us believe that
EEAB stands for "Extraordinary, Efficient
And Brilliant". He and the others who
make the East European Assistance
Bureau tick, will watch the 1995-96 UEFA
Champions League, aware that it will
generate income which could help them
live up to their motto.
One of UEFA's special satisfactions
was that the 1994-95 UEFA Champions
League injected 5,790,000 Swiss francs
into the economies of the 11 Associations
affiliated to the EEAB, totally apart from the
income gained by Spartak Moscow and
Dynamo Kiev.
But I would be wrong to create the
impression that the EEAB is all about
money. Its avowed objective is to inte
grate the new Eastern Associations into
the UEFA family as quickly as possible".
This means that the most precious
commodities are advice and assistance
and TV deals to minibuses and lawnmo-
wers.
In recent months, the EEAB has helped
its affiliates to take part in various Youth
Tournaments. Sounds easy, doesn't? But
if you suggest this to the EEAB staff who
have worked hard on transportation, finan
ce and visas, you might be candidate for a
smack in the eye.
Other countries have been quick to
sympathise with the EEAB's efforts.
A few days ago, each of the 11 affiliated
EEAB Associations received a large pack
of specialized literature and audio-visual
material which has been donated by
various Western Associations.
The 11 countries are Albania, Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia,
Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia and
Ukraine.
