In this stadium Ajax (playing most of
its league matches at their smaller
homeground De Meer) played it's most
important international matches as it
was the setting of many heroic and
unforgettable battles with the best
club-teams in Europe. In the past
years, capacatity was brought down to
42.000 for safety reasons.
As the old stadium, the Amsterdam
Arena, cannot keep up with nowadays
demands, a brand-new stadium will be
built in the south-east of Amsterdam to
replace the good-old Olympic
Stadium. This new, futuristic stadium
will have a capacity of 50.000, all
covered seats and a roof that can be
opened or closed! Ajax will play at the
new stadium from August 1996.
The venue of today's sixth match in
the UEFA Champions League, is the
Amsterdam Olympic Stadium. The sta
dium at the Amstelveenseweg in the
southern part of Amsterdam is a well-
known site in international football and
sports in general. In 1928, the year the
