Welcome to the quarter-finals
of the 1994/95 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
U E FA
CHAMPIONS
LEAGUE
This is the first time in the brief history of
the UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE that the
topteams from the group competition will
contest quarter-final matches. The 1994/95
season began with 16 teams drawn into
four groups in a league format. The 'knock
out' stage now gets under way with the
teams that finished first and second in their
respective groups.
Nobody can deny the pedigree of the
eight clubs from throughout Europe that are
contesting these quarter-finals - Bayern
Munich (Germany), Paris St-Germain
(France), IFK Gotenburg (Sweden),
AC Milan (Italy), SL Benfica (Portugal),
FC Barcelona (Spain), Hadjuk Split (Croatia)
and Ajax Amsterdam (Netherlands).
This reflects the strength and diversity of
European football.
The introduction of quarter-final and
semi-final matches for the 1994-95 UEFA
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE campaign provides
further proof of UEFA's desire to improve
the standard of the game in Europe.
Football cannot stand stilland this is the
reason why the flagship competition of the
European Football Union has undergone
important changes this year. As President
of UEFA, I am conviced that the players,
officials and supporters of the eight teams
remaining in the competition will approach
their forthcoming UEFA CHAMPIONS
LEAGUE matches with the right attitude.
On behalf of the European Football
Union, I would like to wish the teams taking
part in the quarter-finals the best of luck.
Thanks are also due to our commercial and
broadcasting partners in all four corners of
Europe for their support and co-operation,
as well as to all the media representatives
covering the matches. Furthermore, it is my
hope that the matches will be played in
accordance with the ideals of Fair Play -
thereby guaranteeing maximum entertain
ment and enjoyment for the fans in the
stadia and the millions of television viewers.
