(ff k/eome to WHITE HART LANE Jotteiiliam ^Hotspur n M E Sat Jul 31 Chelsea v Ajax Spurs Lazio R U E S jottenhani JBptspur e welcome Ajax, Chelsea and S.S. Lazio to White Hart Lane this weekend for the sixth Makita International Soccer Tournament. The tournament, which has now established itself as the premier pre-season competition, brings together the best teams from all over Europe for a superb football festival. We were involved in the inaugural competition, staged at Wembley Stadium in 1988, along with AC Milan, Bayern Munich and eventual winners Arsenal. Arsenal returned to Wembley the following year and successfully defended the trophy, seeing off the challenge of Dynamo Kiev, FC Porto and Liverpool. The competition moved to Highbury in 1990, with Arsenal playing host to Aston Villa, Real Sociedad and winners Sampdoria. Sampdoria then returned to Highbury in 1991along with Panathinaikos and West Ham United and retained the trophy, and made it a hat-trick last season when the tournament was staged at Eiland Road, where First Division Champions Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, and Stuttgart provided the opposition. Lazio come to White Hart Lane for the second time, having played here in October last year in the second leg of the Capital Cup. Leading 3-0 from the first leg in Rome, thanks to goals from former Spur Paul Gascoigne (10), Giovanni Stroppa (57) and Maurizio Neri (87), they completed a 5-0 aggregate victory here with goals from Stroppa (70) and Giuseppi Signori (73). Ajax also visit White Hart Lane for the second time, as we were drawn together at the first round stage of the European Cup-Winners' Cup in September, 1981. We won 3-1 in the first leg in Amsterdam, Mark Falco (two) and Ricky Villa scoring the goals. The return here, 10 days later, saw Falco on target again along with Tony Galvin and our new manager Ossie Ardiles in a 3-0 victory. Other meetings with the Dutch side include a tour match in August, 1982, when we met in the first round of the Amsterdam 707 Tournament. Ajax won 3-2, with Graham Roberts grabbing both our goals. We also met in a pre-season friendly game, in Holland, in August, 1973. Martin Peters scored our only goal in a 4-1 defeat. Chelsea had a successful Premier League visit to White Hart Lane last season, with our December meeting ending in a 2-1 victory for the Blues. Eddie Newton gave the visitors a late two-goal lead, before debutant substitute Sol Campbell pulled one back with two minutes remaining. We drew 1 -1 with Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge, in March. Teddy Sheringham gave us the lead, from the penalty spot, after 31 minutes and Tony Cascarino equalised 20 minutes later. Now they're all back for a tournament that has already proved as competitive as any cup competition in the world. There are some great games in prospect. 12.45pm Presentation of teams to Managing Director of Makita followed by National Anthems 12.55pm Match One 2.45pm Presentation of teams to Managing Director of Makita followed by National Anthems. 2.55pm Match Two Sun Aug 1 12.30pm Third/Fourth Play-Off Presentation of medals on pitch V V 2.20pm Presentation of teams to Managing Director of Makita followed by National Anthems 2.30pm The Final y Presentation of The Makita International Soccer Tournament Trophy and Medals to Players and Officials The Winning Team shall be the team that wins two matches.
