IT is a great privilege to be able to welcome the officials and players of
Ajax of Amsterdam one of the world's most famous football clubs
to Burnley for this prestigious friendly match.
Only last week, our visitors this evening were successfully invovled in the
final of the UEFA Cup, and that is a sure sign of the stature they still have
in the game.
They are among the elite of European football and have some of the top
stars in the game in their playing ranks.
Being able to attract a club of such standing to Turf Moor for this match
shows that things are going very much in the right direction for everyone
involved in our club the Board, the manager, his staff, the players the
club staff and the fans.
And it is for the fans as much as for anyone else that we have organised
this match. It has been a long season with a lot of travelling, but the support
that you, our fans, have given to the players has been second to none.
Winning the Fourth Division title is something everyone has waited for and
the return to the higher divisions is something we are all working for and
look forward to.
But to be able to organise special events like tonight's match offers
everyone a welcome break from the pressures of professional football and
gives everyone involved in Burnley Football Club the chance to enjoy the
game.
As I have already said, we feel greatly privileged to have such illustrious
guests here tonight, and I must thank everyone at Ajax for making tonight's
game possible.
