Bob Gansler was appointed head coach of the U.S.
SoccerFederationNationalTeamonJan. 16, 1989. Hetook
over for Lothar Osiander, who had coached the U.S. Na
tional Team on a part-time basis since 1986.
Gansler holds a national "A" coaching license and has
been a Federation staff coach since 1975. Immediately
prior to this appointment he coached both the U.S. National
Under-20 Team and the University of Wisconsin-Milwau
kee soccer team.
Gansler's international coaching experience (since 1976)
includes helping in the preparation of teams for competi
tion in the Pan American Games, Olympic Games and
World Cup qualifying. He was head coach of the United
States Under-19 team from 1979 to 1982. qualifying his
1981 team for the World Youth Championships in Austra
lia, the first time an American team had ever qualified for
that competition. He coached the United States 1987World

Five-a-SideTeam which took
the bronze medal in January. 1989 at the first FIFA World
Championship for Five-a-Side Football.
As a player, Machnik was an All-American (in 1962) at
Long Island University. Following his senior year Machnik
began his coaching career at his alma mater where in 1966
he became the youngest NCAA coach to reach the national
championship game. Machnik served as the University of
New Haven's athletic director and varsity soccer coach
from 1974 through 1980. His overall college coaching
record is 148-62-23.
Machnik holds a doctorate in recreation from the
University ofUtah (1973) andamasters degree in guidance
and counseling (Long Island, 1966).

A central defender during his playing days, Gansler
captained the U.S. Olympic soccer team in both 1964 and
1968, and the U.S. Pan American Games team in 1963 and
1967. He played for the U.S. National Team in 1968-69 and
competed one year in the North American Soccer League.
While pursuing his masters degree in German at
Marquette University, Gansler coached the Marquette varsity
team, a position he held from 1964-67. In 1970 he became
head coach at Marquette University High School where his
teams won five conference championships, one state title
and three second place finishes over nine seasons.
Born in Hungary July 11941Gansler emigrated from
West Germany to the U.S. when he was 11. Gansler, his
wife Nancy and four sons - Robert 19, Michael 17, Peter 13.
and Daniel 11 - reside in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

has coached in many full
internationals for the United
States. He has toured Rus
sia, Mexico, Guatemala and Canada with the Federation.
Born Aug. 5, 1951, Perez was a forward during his high
school days at Brentwood. N.Y. He began coaching at Whit-
tier College in California in the fall of 1974 taking the team
to the NAIA playoffs in the fall of 1976. In addition to his
tenure at Whittier, Perez has served as head coach at Cal-
State Fullerton, Cal-State Los Angeles, Santa Clara and
assistant coach at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
Perez, who has more than 100 career college coaching wins
to his credit, took over the women's program at Cal-State
San Bernardino, a Division III school, last June.
Ralph, his wife, Leann, and daughter, Danelle, reside in
San Bernardino, Calif.
