United States referee Vincent
Mauro has been selected by the Refe
rees' Committee of FIFA, the interna
tional governing body of soccer, to its
roster of officials for the 1990 World
Cup in Italy.
Mauro, of Arlington, Massachu
setts, has officiated at high level inter
national competitions including a re
cent assignment at the Asian zone
qualifying matches for the 1990 World
Cup, in Singapore.
"We are delighted with the honor
that Vinnie brings to the federation,"
said Keith Walker, Secretary General
of the U.S. Soccer Federation."He has
proven himself over the years to be an
official who has performed with con
sistency at the highest level, and we
look forward to him receiving appro
priate appointments within the World
Cup finals."
Mauro, an engineer by trade who
came to the United States from Italy in
1954, began refereeing youth soccer
as a parent volunteer, and during the
past 20 years has risen to the top of his
officiating profession.
"I wasn't looking to become an
international referee," said Mauro. "But
each time I reached a plateau, I set
another goal for myself. I have always
thought of myself as No. 2, because if
there is someone ahead of you, you
always strive to become better."
Mauro has been on the U.S. Soc
cer Federation's FIFA list, the elite
group of seven American international
soccer referees, since 1985.
