PAPER TALK!!
Despite losing 4-0 against Ajax, Dundalk gained great credit from their
performance. Terry Conlon of the Argus (who have to be praised for having
a full match report in their paper next morning), nominated Dundalk cap
tain, Joey Malone for special mention.
"Time and again it was Joey Malone the much criticised Dundalk cap
tain who cam to Dundalk's rescue, getting in a vital header, a boot or a
clearance. At times he was like the boy holding his finger in the dyke, stan
ching, appropriately enough, since he was playing in Amsterdam between
Ajax and a certain goal."
Charlie Stuart of the Irish Press put European Football into perspec
tive for Irish clubs.
"As so often in the past, it was again proved last night that League of
Ireland clubs are really no opposition for the top continentals. The speed,
the artistry and controlled play were a joy to watch for the neutral observer.
If you want to see quality exhibition play Oriel Park is the place to be in
a fortnight's time".
Maybe Noel Dunne of the Irish Independent caught the mood of Dun
dalk's performance by stating.
"One comparatively recent addition to the historic city of Amsterdam's
coat of arms is the motto, Heroic, Resolut, Charitable. I would scarcely term
Ajax heroic. That attribute belonged more I think to Dundalk for the man
ner in which they battled against the odds."
Elsewhere it was a sad night in Europe for Shamrock Rovers and Jim
my Meagan of the Irish Press was critical of the Kram movement.
"The Kram faction and the Hoops rebel supporters might hae served
the club and their cause better had they demonstrated inside rather than out
side the Northside venue. Rovers dithered and dawdled throughout 90
frustrating minutes watched by a meagre crowd of 2,189, probably the small
attendance ever to watch Rovers in action in European competition.'
Martin Duffy, on trial for Athlone has an outstanding game in the
scoreless draw for Bohemians against Aberdeen and completely blocked out
Joe Millar that £800,000 rated midfielder. Duffy was quick to quip to Karl
McGinnity of the Independent afterwards, "If Millar is worth £800,000, I
must be worth £8 by now!'
