Rangers: WoodsMcGregor, Phillips,
Roberts, Kirkwood, Butcher,
Ferguson, Fleck, McCoist, Durrant,
Cooper. Substitutes: Nicholl for
McGregor and Munro for Fleck.
Referee was Kurt Roethlisberger.
An expected gate of 6,000 was kept
down to just 1,000 because of the
heavy rains in the region that day.
The next game was against Wet-
tingen in Wohlen on Tuesday night,
and this time round we won 3-2.
The one bit of good news through
before we started was that Avi Cohen
finally received clearance to play. So,
he lined-up in this team:
Woods, Cohen, Phillips, Roberts,
Kirkwood, Butcher, Falco, Souness,
McCoist, Durrant, Cooper. Substi
tutes were: McGregor for Roberts,
Nicholl for Butcher, Nisbet for
McCoist and Fleck for Falco.
The Wettingen team was: Stiel, Frei,
Baumgartner, Schepull, Peterhans,
Marin, Friberg, Hausermann,
Mautone, Rueds, Bertelsen. Substi
tutes were: Cermann for Marin,
Marin for Mautone.
So, there was a debut for Falco who
had joined the squad the previous
day, and to complete a hat-trick of
relatively new faces, Trevor Francis
was sitting on the bench after arriv
ing in Switzerland from Italy for sign
ing talks with Manager, Graeme
Souness.
Indeed, it was the Boss who
equalised the goal from Mautone
after 14 minutes but then Marin made
it 2-1 for Wettingen before an Ally
McCoist penalty once again put the
scores level.
Just before half time, McCoist
scored again to make it 3-2, and this is
how it stayed for the rest of the game.
Referee for this match was Rolf Blatt-
mann from Zeiningen and the atten
dance was 1,000.
On the following day, the squad
were involved in a long trip into the
mountains next to the French
border, for a game against
Grounded but on the mark is Ally
McCoist scoring his second goal
against Delemont.
Lausanne Sports, which was part of
a local festival in the tiny village Les
Charbonnierres.
It is a picture postcard village,
miles from anywhere and nestling
next to a lake and in front of the
mountains.
This time, we drew 1-1 with
Lausanne after substitute Robert
Fleck opened the score in 53
minutes, only to see Pierre-Andre
Schurmann equalise. It was an enter
taining match, our only problem was
an injury to Graham Roberts and he
in fact was substituted by John
McGregor mid-way through the first
half.
The team on this occasion was:
Woods, Cohen, Munro, Roberts,
Kirkwood, Butcher, Falco, Souness,
McCoist, Durrant, Cooper. Subs
were: McGregor for Roberts, Nicholl
for Cohen and Fleck for Falco.
The Lausanne team was: Ruchat,
Tachat, Bissig, Henry, Martin, Schur
mann, Brodard, Leger, Thychosen,
Fernandez, Tonare. Referee was Mr.
W. Aimer from Le Pont, and the atten
dance was 1,500.
On Thursday the party left the tour
nament headquarters in the pic
turesque town of Solothurn and
headed for Germany.
Davie Cooper lets fly at the Delemont
goal during the second half.
We reserved our best perfor
mance of the Tournament for last
Saturday when we beat Bayer Uer-
dingen 2-0.
It was an impressive result and a
great morale booster for this week
end's Tournament.
Right from the start we dominated
the German First Division side and
although former Ibrox favourite Prytz
showed some neat touches in the
Bayer midfield, he was up against a
team determined to finish the trip on
a high note.
Manager Graeme Souness open
ed the scoring after 37 minutes and
the second-half goal from John
McGregor was enough to send the
Ibrox fans in the crowd of 4,340 away
happy.
The victory was well merited and
the Manager made it clear after
wards that the style we used against
the Germans can also be used in
away games in the European Cup.
But more importantly for the mo
ment, he was delighted with the level
of fitness the players reached during
their 12 days away in Switzerland and
Germany.
And that, after all, is principally
what it was all about, as we build up
for next week's big kick off.
The team that beat Bayer was:
Woods, Nicholl, Munro, Kirkwood,
McGregor Cohen, Roberts, Souness,
McCoist, Durrant, Cooper.
Substitutes were: Phillips for Dur
rant. Walker, Fleck, Falco, Nisbet not
used.
Bayer Uerdingen: Vollack, Bommer,
Buttergereit, Dampen, W Funkel,
Edvalsson, Prytz, F. Funkel, Mathy,
Herget, Kuntz.
Substitutes were: Klinger for F.
Funkel, Witeczek for Kuntz, Raschid
for Kirchhoff. Kubik, Chmielewski,
Scholtysik not used.
Referee: H. Puchalski Uerdingen
After that, the troops headed home
on Sunday for a couple of days well
deserved rest before re-starting
training in time for this weekends'
competition.
It was all quite hectic but never
theless, tremendously worthwhile
for the Manager and the entire
squad.
