JOHN TOSHACK. Team Manager. Aged 38 - born 22 March, 1949. Made his name first as a centre-forward and played 40 times for Wales at senior level as well as in the Wales schoolboy and under-23 teams. Toshack made his name with Cardiff City, making his first-team debut at 16 and scoring 75 goals in 162 league games to earn his transfer to Liverpool in November, 1970. He spent eight years at Anfield under Bill Shankly and then Bob Paisley, sharing in all their success and forging a particularly fearsome partnership in attack with Kevin Keegan. In March 1978 he was sold to Swansea, brought them up to the First Division and appeared heir-apparent to the Liverpool manager ship. Instead, when Bob Paisley retired the job went to Joe Fagan and, after Swansea's collapse back down through the league, Toshack was tempted in 1984 to take his managerial skills abroad with Sporting Lisbon. He lasted just under a year with Sporting - rejecting an approach from Aston Villa in the mean time - and took over Sociedad in the autumn of 1985. Luis Miguel ARCONADA Echarre. Goalkeeper. Aged 33 - born 26 June, 1954. Like almost all Sociedad's players, promoted from the second division nursery team, Sanse (San Sebas tian CF) - in his case, in 1973. Arconada was a reserve in Spain's squad at the 1978 World Cup finals in Argentina and then progressed to national captain - and a record caps total (68) - in 1982. Unfortunately he made some bad mistakes in the finals on home ground, including the one which brought a sensa tional defeat by Northern Ireland. Another big-game mistake conceded a first goal to a Michel Platini free kick when Spain finished runners-up to France in the 1984 European championship Final. At the start of the following season Arconada suffered a serious knee ligament injury and lost his Spain place to Barcelona's Zubizarreta. However he returned to fitness and top form last season and was Sociedad's hero in the cup final. Jose Luiz GONZALEZ Vazquez. Goalkeeper. Aged 22 - born 27 August, 1964. Promoted from Sanse to the first team squad in 1985. Agustin GAJATE Vidriales. Centre-back/sweeper. Aged 29 - born 23 March, 1958. Promoted to the first-team squad in 1977. Voted the best sweeper in the Spanish first division this past season, by a leading Spanish sports magazine. Javier SAGARZAZU Unanue. Right back. Aged 23 - born 1 September, 1963. In the first-team squad since 1983. Alberto GORRIZ Echarte. Left back. Aged 29 - born 16 February, 1958. One of the hardest-tackling defenders in the Spanish first division. Switched from Sanse in 1975 when just turned 17. Jose DADIE. Central defender. Aged 21. Promoted in emergency into the first-team squad from Sanse in the middle of last season and played so well he stayed in the team to collect a cup-winner's medal. Luis Maria LOPEZ REKARTE. Defender/midfield. Aged 25 - born 26 March, 1962. One of Sociedad's few signings from outside, when he was bought from second division Alaves two years ago. Jose Maria ZUNIGA Martiarena. Defender. Aged 24 - born 21 August, 1962. In the first-team squad for the past three years. Reckoned one of the fastest fullbacks in Spain. Juan Antonio LARRANAGA Gurruchaga. Midfield. Aged 29 - born 2 July, 1958. Promoted from Sanse seven years ago. Converted the fourth, decisive, penalty in the shoot-out victory over Atletico Madrid in the Spanish cup final. Jesus Maria ZAMORA Ansorena. Midfield. Aged 32 - born 1 January, 1955. Began with Sanse and moved over to Sociedad in 1972 - making him the longest-serving player now on the books. Zamora was a member of Spain's World Cup squad of 40 for Argentina '78 and then their schemer-in-chief on home ground in 1982. Does not score often, but the goals he does get are often vital - such as the decisive games at the end of Sociedad's Goalkeeper Midfielder Luis Arconada Juan Larranaga championship seasons of 1981 and 1982 and in Spain's victory over England at Wembley in 1981. That same year he was also picked for the Rest of Europe in a flood disaster appeal game against Italy. In recent years he has suffered a series of career-threatening injuries and has not played for Spain since the 1982 World Cup finals. Has 30 caps for Spain. Javier ZUBILLAGA Martinez. Midfield. Aged 27 - born 12 August, 1959. Signed from Sanse in 1981. Juan Maria MUJIKA Izaguirre. Midfield. Aged 24 - born 12 May, 1963. Promoted from Sanse two years ago. Luciano ITURRINO Cenekorta. Forward. Aged 23 - born 4 November, 1963. Promoted to the first-team squad three years ago. Jose Maria BAQUERO Escudero. Winger. Aged 24 - born 11 Feburary, 1963. Born in Pamplona, the town regularly in the news for the annual bull-running. Baquero, too, is powerful and quick, on the fringe of the national squad and a player coveted by all Spain's top clubs. He has been top scorer for Sociedad in the league over the past two seasons, with 16 goals in 1985-6 and 11 goals this past season. Baquero made both Sociedad goals - for Lopez Ufarte and Beguiristain - in the cup final success. Aitor BEGUIRUSTAIN Mujica. Midfield. Aged 22 - born 12 August, 1964. Shares the same birthday with fellow midfielder Zubillaga but is five years younger. Another Sanse product, joining Sociedad in 1984, and now rated one of the best right wingers in Spain. Ricardo ARRIEN Iriondo. Forward. Aged 26 - born 15 November, 1960. Born in the historic old Basque town of Guernica and signed by Sociedad from first division rivals San tander last summer.
