EUROPEAN CUP FIRST ROUND CELTIC v AJAX
WHATEVER else I may have to say or do to
produce the best performance from the Celtic
players tonight, motivation is one ingredient
that will not be necessary. The fact that we
are playing one of the most successful club
sides in the history of the European Cup takes
care of that side of things quite nicely.
Our players will thrive on the atmosphere
that the big crowd will generate but then so
too will the Dutch players who are also used to
playing in front of big crowds. All things being
equal I think the game should thrill and delight
the fans tonight.
I have watched Ajax in action twice since the
daw was made in July and I have been
impressed by the way they play. They do not,
for example, play negative football and their
team has been built around players who like to
attack and play flowing football in a positive
manner. That isn't to suggest that they cannot
defend or that they are careless at the back -
far from it.
With two teams on the park who are inclined
to play football in an attacking fashion this
game should delight the connoisseurs.
In the last three years the European Cup has
paired us with such big names as Real Madrid
and Juventus and our players have learned
many lessons from these encounters. The
experiences of the past should stand us in
good stead tonight but on top of that the
players realise that only their very best form
will be good enough to overcome the men
from Holland.
