EUROPEAN CUP FIRST ROUND CELTIC v AJAX
Player Profile on the
Piet Schrivers, 15.12.46 (Goalkeeper)
One of Holland's most experienced and cap
able goalkeepers. He has won international
honours at all levels, youth, under-23 and full.
He has played 28 times for the national side as
well as being a reserve on another 40 occa
sions. Signed from Twente Enschede in 1974
he has helped Ajax to four Dutch champion
ships in 1977, 1979, 1980 and 1982
Hans Galje, 21.2.57 (Goalkeeper)
Started his career with amateur side DHL
before turning professional with FC Den Haag.
He joined Ajax in 1980 and has played a
number of times for the Dutch under-21 team.
Keje Molenaar, 29.9.58 (Defender)
Joined Ajax from Volendam. Was voted Young
Player of the Year in the Second Division in
1980 while with his previous club. He played
eight times for the Youth International side
and has recently won full international hon
ours. Is reputed to be something of a specialist
from the penalty spot.
Peter Boeve, 14.3.57 (Defender)
A product of Ajax's youth teams, he signed full
professional in 1979. He has gained three
Dutch Youth team and four Dutch military
caps.
Piet Wijnberg, 20.10.57 (Defender)
Previously with Hilversum and FC Utrecht he
joined Ajax in 1978. Another member of the
Ajax defence with Dutch military caps, he has
been a regular in three championship winning
sides. A versatile player whose normal position
is right full-back.
Dick Schoenaker, 30.11.52 (Mldfield)
Another current international who made his
first brief appearance for Holland in Argentina
in the 5-1 win over Austria when he came on
as substitute. Although he is 29 years old he
only signed full professional in 1976. Neverthe
less he has considerable experience and is,
like Schrivers, a veteran of four championship
winning sides. He is a very mobile player with a
flair for scoring goals. He watched Celtic in
Rotterdam where he confessed to a group of
our fans that he was very impressed by Tommy
Burns.
Soren Lerby, 1.2.58 (Mldfield)
A Danish international whom Ajax signed at
the age of 17 in 1975. At the age of 24 he has
great experience, for as well as playing in the
last four championship winning sides he has
also captained the club. He was originally
regarded as a full-back but since his switch to
midfield has scored many vital goals. He pos
sesses great skill as well as a very good left
foot.
Frank Rijkaard, 30.9.62 (Mldfield)
One of Ajax's bright young prospects who has
broken into the side in the past couple of
seasons. He is a very skilful player who has
played at full-back but prefers midfield. He is
one of the young stars on whom Ajax hope to
base a successful future. Played for Holland at
Hampden last year.
Johan Cruyff, 25.4.47(Midfield)
A player who needs no introduction. In his
second term at Ajax at the age of 35 his
introduction into the midfield has provided the
inspiration needed for the side to take off. In
his debut last season Cruyff scored a magnifi
cent goal which helped silence a lot of the
criticism levelled at the circumstances of his
return. He has missed the early part of the
present season through injury but should be fit
to play tonight. Cruyff has also played at
sweeper in the current Ajax team and it will be
interesting to see what role he will play aqainst
Celtic.
Piet Hamberg, 22.1.54 (Midfield)
A vastly experienced player with several clubs
and has won international honours. He started
his career with Nijmegen NEC and later played
for Wageningen, FC Utrecht and Servette of
Geneva. He joined Ajax in 1980 but is suffering
from an illness which will keep him out of
football for some time.
