About the matches for the UEFA-CUP, the first draw indicated Manchester United
as our opponent. Beating in Amsterdam the as finalist judgel English team by 10, at
United s Old Traffic, Ajax lost, but with honour, by 2 goals to nil. After the game
manager Tommy Docherty said: 'This match was a final.'
Neither success in the battle for the Dutch-Cup; Ajax was eliminated by
FC Utrecht (21).
The appointment of TOMISLAV IVIC as trainer-coach at the start of the season
1976-1977 brought new inspiration in the Ajax-team. Having not only a big know-how
of football but also a lot of enthousiasm, mr. Ivic reconstructed the team,
approaching tactically the problems of every match, giving the players more
self-convidence and further hardworking with them and assistent BOB HAARMS
for the object they proposed themselves: results, points, no losses.
And successfully: Ajax finished the League 1976-T977 asagainCHAMPION OF
THE NETHERLANDS. Not only mr. Ivic and mr. Haarms but everyone in the club
(the board, the medical staff, the technical advisory committee a.o.) have contributed
to this splendid outcome. Because everybody is feeling that this result is just a
beginning of the way back to the top of international football. It is very important
to continue the good results both in League-matches and in European Cup I.
Once more all selectionteams of the juniors became NUMBER 1 in their League, the
first team of them being NATIONAL CHAMPION. Undoubtedly, AJAX can look
forward with optimism to times to come.
