Brown GrRoot The BAR-347, Brown Root's new third generation pipelaying barge. Designed to allow more working time in extremely rough and unusually deep water, it meas ures 650 feet in length by 140 feet in width by 50 feet in depth. The barge's center-line, elevated pipe ramp, and three pipe tensioners permit the laying of 80-foot length, double- jointed, large-diameter pipe in deep water, without the use of a pipelaying pontoon. The BAR-347's first assignment was laying the very first 42-inch pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico, in waters of up to 150 feet in depth. With housing facilities for 350 people and storage for 20,000 tons of pipe, the barge has capabilities for either seven work stations for double-jointed pipe or nine work stations for 40-foot automatic or manual welding joints. Also included: a pipe bevelling station, two 125-ton capacity gantry cranes, twelve 60,000- pound anchors, and a heliport. The BAR-347, the barge that's helping to bring offshore energy onshore.
