Foreword by Brigadier Kenneth Hargreaves, A, The Queen's Silver Jubilee Appeal for Youth C.B.E., T.D. First, I would like to thank the Directors, Staff, and Players of Leeds United Football Club for their kindness and generosity in putting on this fine entertainment tonight, and Ajax Amsterdam for their great help. The object of the Appeal is to raise as large a capital sum as possible, so that The Queen's Jubilee Trust for Youth can be formed on a strong and permanent basis. The aims of the Trust are: To help young people to help others, particularly the less fortunate, giving them opportunities for character training and learning the art of leadership, and fitting them to take a responsible share in the development of our country. Half of the money raised in the first year will be used to finance urgent projects locally, the remainder going to a great national fund from which grants will be available for future work. Already grants have been made in West Yorkshire to encourage a number of worth-while exciting developments by various voluntary youth organisations and schools, such as canal boats, new buildings, holiday activities, equipment for camping, and for sports. Much of the work involved is done by the young people concerned, with great saving in cost. In at least two areas we can point to a big drop in juvenile delinquency since these schemes have started. The National Fund has already reached some £12,000,000. In West Yorkshire we have so far raised £300,000, but our aim is for a much larger sum. There are many here tonight who can offer their help in the leadership and running of youth organisations. There are others who could help in fund raising events, and others who could give us money. There are many also who are doing just these things. This evening is being specially organised by and for the Leeds Metropolitan District Jubilee Appeal Committee, but the County Organisation and the other Metropolitan District Committees will also be delighted to have offers of help or money. It will be well spent. Their addresses are given below. In each case please write to the Chief Executive. H. M. Lord-Lieutenant for the County of West Yorkshire. The West Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council, County Hall, Wakefield. Bradford Metropolitan District Council, City Hall, Bradford. Calderdale Metropolitan District Council, Town Hall, Halifax. Kirklees Metropolitan District Council, Town Hall, Huddersfield. Leeds Metropolitan District Council, Civic Hall, Leeds. Wakefield Metropolitan District Council, Town Hall, Wakefield.
