career to an end and though he still feels some discomfort when
playing, loves the game sufficiently to put up with it. Present
occupation: Bookmaker.
Keith Ripley (versatile) That's how Keith describes himself
when referring to his playing days. Occupied various roles in the
United team during a nine year period from 1949. Played in
defence, midfield and attack. Present occupation: Road
construction.
Roy Ellam (centre-half) Began his professional career as a
defender with Bradford City making over 150 first team
appearances for the Valley Parade club before being transferred to
Huddersfield Town. Roy made well over 200 appearances for
Town before moving to Eiland Road. Present occupation:
Salesman.
Jack Charlton (centre-half) Made 772 first team appearances in
a lengthy and illustrious career at Eiland Road. Though a defender

successful period with Mexborough in the North Midlands
League. Present occupation: Mail order manager.
George Meek (winger) Played for United in the 1950's
operating on either flank. In all, he made 200 League and Cup
appearances for United, scoring 19 goals, before moving on to
Leicester City for a fee in the region of £7,000. Present
occupation: Factory owner.
Bobby Collins (midfield) Affectionately remembered as the
midfield "general" who did so much to help United back to
Soccer prominence. Signed in 1962 from Everton for a fee of
