JOE WARK, ten years a Fir Parker, twice named the
Supporters' Player of the Year and veteran of so many
Texaco Cup and Anglo-Scottish Cup ties, today breaks
new ground as club captain by leading 'well out against a
classy European side.
"We have played a few close-season tour games in
Germany, Denmark and Italy but this is the first time I
have played against a top European side, and I must say
I'm looking forward to facing players we normally only
read about in newspapers or see play in glimpses on the
television.
"There should be an interesting contrast in styles from
what we have been experiencing amid the tensions of the
Premier League. Ajax will allow us to play football with
out harrassment, permitting our skilful players to show
off their skills and this should make it all the more enter
taining for the spectators.
"I just hope now that the supporters do rally round this
bold effort by the club. I know it's outwith the normal
football season but the reputation of Ajax should be able
to pull in a few thousand neutrals. And with the pressure
off we might be able to redeem ourselves to our own
support for a disappointing season. JOE WARK
MOTHERWELL Football Club are to be congratulated
for showing such initiative in attempting to bring one of
the world's top footballing sides to play at FirPark. I just
hope and pray that the weather this memorable Sunday
is kind to us and that the football-going public in Lanark
shire responds to the challenge.
I can remember with great joy the last era when
European sides were featured regularly at Fir Park. I am
going back about 15-20 years but can still remember
vividly some of the wonderful football play by both
Motherwell and their many distinguished guests.
The best of that bunch was the game against Atletico
Bilbao 1 can still see the water splashing off the netting
as Willie Hunter's equaliser hit the back of the goal. 1
hope this new series being planned brings as much
pleasure to the younger 'well fan. It's a tremendous
gamble for any provincial club: 1 hope the fans realise it
and give it the support it deserves.
