It is a great pleasure for me on behalf of
the Directors, Management, Players, Staff
and Supporters of Manchester United to
extend a very warm welcome to the
President and Members of the Ajax party
tonight. For our first match in a U.E.F.A
competition since 1969 we could not
have been drawn against more attractive
opponents. It is unfortunate that we did
not meet much later in the competition
and that one of our clubs must go out of
the cup at this early stage.
We were given a very warm reception
in Amsterdam two weeks ago and our
supporters, despite the rigid security
arrangements, were also made to feel
welcome. It is our opportunity to recipro
cate in a similar manner this evening.
With only a single goal between the
two teams the match is poised on a
knife-edged balance and the result can
go either way. If it is our night for victory
I am sure our opponents will be the first
to offer their congratulations and if the
game does not go our way then we will
be the first to extend our best wishes to
Ajax for the remainder of the competition.
I ask all our supporters to give a true
Lancashire welcome to our visitors and
if the match is anything like as good as
the first leg then we can look forward to
a truly exciting evening.
L. C. EDWARDS,
Chairman, M.U.F.C.
