Modern day soccer, it is often said, is rapidly
becoming devoid of "characters". But tonight we
have at least two of the game's best loved
personalities on the field. Denis Law is, of course,
the star of the show, but to continue the show
business analogy, bringing both halves to a close
will be referee Roger Kirkpatrick whose bubbling
personality and gesticulations always leave an
impression on a match. And no-one can ever
complain about his fitness. When not refereeing he
plays squash, golf and five-a-side football.
Deeply interested in football at schoolboy level,
Roger Kirkpatrick is of the opinion that all referees
should devote at least one Saturday of their
season to schools' football.
It was at schoolboy level that he started his
refereering career back in 1949. Progress through
the Leicestershire Senior League and Southern
League culminated in his appointment to the
Football League line in 1964 and the referee's
panel two years later.
No stranger to Europe, and European football,
Roger officiated at a Youth International
Tournament at A.D.O., The Hague, in 1971—a
tournament which tonight's visitors, Ajax, won. In
addition he has controlled games between English
clubs and nine European countries including teams
from Russia, Poland, Holland and Spain. In 1970
he officiated in the international clash between
Finland and Denmark.
Managing director of a leading hosiery company
in the Midlands, Roger Kirkpatrick is married
with two sons.

J. R. Griffith from Manchester.
