A Warm
Welcome
For the
WorM Champions!
1873-1973
General Manager
Willie Waddell.
WHEN Rangers general manager Willie
Waddell started planning the club's cen
tenary celebrations a few months ago, he
knew that there was one game which would
truly match the magnificence of the
occasiona confrontation between the Cup
Kings of Europe.
And this is why tonight European Cup
champions Ajax of Holland, who are also
holders of the World Club title, are at
Ibrox to face the Light Blues the
reigning Cup Winners' Cup champs.
What a contest this promises to bea
game which has fired the imagination of
the public in Scotland, Holland indeed
the whole of Europe.
Ajax have thrilled the Scottish fans by
their winning performances in the past two
European Cup Finals. Now here's the chance
for the Rangers supporters to see live the
great stars such as Johann Cruyff, Europe's
Player of the Year in 1971, the tall, power
ful Piet Keizer and the other giants who
have carried the Dutch champions to the
No. 1 spot in the world.
The Dutchmen can be sure of the kind of
welcome tonight that a club of their
stature deserves and they can also be
certain of a real test of their skill and
ability.
Rangers' players, banned from Europe for
a year, are desperate to be involved once
again in the thrill and excitement which
surrounds this kind of match.
And there can be little doubt that
tonight's game, and the return in Holland
later in the month, will bring back the kind
of atmosphere which lifted the Light Blues
to that triumph in Barcelona eight months
ago.
