I have been asked to give my impressions of the
opening of the Ajax Stadium.
In the first place it is not necessary for me to add
my compliments to Mr. Rodenburg for this
splendid structure. I have been in most European
countries and I may say I have never seen one to
compare with it.
At the same time we could not say good-bye to
the old ground without a certain feeling of regret,
for here has been built the foundation of the new
Stadium.
When I look back to the old days of 191546 when
Ajax were 2nd class „the ground accomodation
consisted of a small covered stand and another
stand behind the goal; later improvements were
continually being made to cope with the increasing
attendence and compare it now to the new home it
has been a wonderfull achievement.
I may say it gave me great pleasure to walk along
side of the old team of 191748 because I consider
this team to have been the best Amateur team I
ever saw and a great deal of credit must be given
to them for making this Stadium possible and also
in making the name of Ajax so well known not
only in Holland but far outside.
There is a great responsibilty for the present
players of the Club in keeping up the great tradb
tions and it should be the aim of every boy to
emulate the Pelsers, Brokman, Natris, Van Dort
and Gupfert and later of Anderiesse, Van Kol and
Volkers etc.
We have not only gained a reputation of playing
high class football but also for clean and fair play;
it is the duty of all the members to keep this
reputation.
Ajax are fortunate in having a splendid Com*
mittee and an experienced Team Committee, old
players like Brokman, Couton and Delsen, who
have all earned their spurs on the field. Just a few
words of advice to the young players; they should
remember that only 11 players can play to the team
and players must wait and do their duty in the
lower teams, untill their chance comes for only in
this way can the RoocUWit flag be kept on top.
I feel sure the Club can rest assured in regard to
the future, for we have a good many promising
players. Still I may say there is plenty of room for
more and it ought to be a big inducement for the
youth of Amsterdam to become a member of such
a club with its splendid accomodation, training
and traditions.

Mij is gevraagd geworden mijn indrukken te geven van de
opening van het Ajax-Stadion,
In de eerste plaats is het voor mij niet noodig mijn compli
menten aan den heer Rodenburg toe te voegen voor zijn
schitterend bouwwerk, Ik ben in vele landen van Europa ge
weest en ik mag zeggen nimmer één stadion te hebben gezien
wat er meer is te vergelijken.
Terzelfder tijd kunnen zij geen vaarwel zeggen aan ons oude
veld, zonder een gevoel van spijt, daar hierop toch als het
ware den grondslag voor het nieuwe Stadion werd gelegd.
Wanneer ik terugdenk aan het seizoen 1915/16 toen Ajax,
in de 2e klasse was, bestond de accomodatie uit een kleine
overdekte tribune en een staantribune achter het doel.
Verdere uitbreiding werd successievelijk aangebracht in ver
band met de groeiende belangstelling, en vergelijk dit nu met
ons nieuwe „home", dan heeft er zich een wonderbaarlijke
verandering voltrokken.
Verder mag ik wel opmerken dat het oude elftal uit de jaren
1917/18 me veel plezier heeft gegeven, omdat ik dit elftal als
het beste amateur-team heb beschouwd dat ik ooit zag, en
het ontstaan van ons nieuwe Stadion komt voor een groot
deel voor hun rekening, benevens de goede naam. die Ajax
niet alléén in Holland maar ook vér daarbuiten heeft.
Er rust op de spelers van ons eerste eftal een groote ver
antwoordelijkheid om deze groote tradities te handhaven en
het moet de wil van iedere jonge speler zijn om te wedijveren
met de Pelsers, Brockmann, de Natris, van Dort en Guppfert
en, later een Anderiessen, Van Kol, Volkers enz.
Wij hebben niet alleen een reputatie verkregen van „hooge
school" voetbal te spelen, doch eveneens van mooi en fair
spel, en het is de plicht van ieder lid deze reputatie te hand
haven,
Ajax mag zich verheugen in een prima Bestuur en een elftal
commissie met ondervinding, bestaande uit oude spelers als
Brockmann, Couton en Delsen, die hun sporen op het veld
ruimschoots hebben verdiend.
Nu nog een paar woorden voor onze jonge spelers. Zij zullen
bedenken dat er slechts elf spelers in een elftal kunnen zijn,
en dat zij hebben te wachten en hun plicht doen in lagere
elftallen, totdat hun kans daar is, want slechts op deze wijze
kan de Rood-Witte vlag in top blijven.
Ik zie de toekomst van onze vereeniging rustig tegemoet,
daar wij veelbelovende jonge spelers hebben. Ik mag zelfs
zeggen dat er ruimte voor meerdere is en het moet voor de
Amsterdamsche jeugd wel zeer aantrekkelijk zijn, lid te zijn
van zulk een vereeniging, met haar schitterende accomodatie,
training en tradities,
