In this last edition of 1998 left wingergjmujj^jjmjj talks about his period at Ajax and his period before Ajax at
PSV. Most of the matches he is one of the better players in a initially struggling Ajax, except for maybe the first ten
minutes of a match. „I'm always beat then." This has got everything to do with his height of 1,93 m. Hoekstra
needs time to warm up. Already in his period at PSV Ajax fans have had a weak spot for him. They considered him
as an Ajax player playing for the wrong team. Hoekstra: „Everytime I ran into other Ajax players of the youth team
of Holland, they were always talking about tricks and skill. At PSV that was a lot less important."
Peter Hoekstra keeps on filling his box of tricks, for example by learning from Mario Melchiot. „That's another
difference between Ajax and PSV. Ajax players always want to play the ball through your legs. At PSV that wasn't the
case. If you had a nice move at PSV, you didn't hear a thing. YOU DO AT AJAX.' Personally Hoekstra doesn't like any
fuzz, but as a footballplayer he loves a show. His modesty has got everything to do with his roots. Hoekstra: ,,I
come from Assen, in the north of Holland, the people are more down to earth there. When I stop playing football I
will definitely return there. That's the place I call home. People always ask me 'what do you do in that hole? Nothing
ever happens.' But I feel at home there."
Assistant-trainer has got one speciality: bringing back injured players to the first team. He
explains what it takes: „A trainer who is used to watch and stand with his arms crossed, doesn't even have to
think about starting. He won't be a good rehabilitation trainer. YOU MUST KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
Knowing when to increase the number of trainingsessions per phase and knowing when you can start with the
ball. I'm scared to death that one of these guys will get hurt again and relapses. IT'S ALL INTUITION."
